History

History is not only written, it is re-written by every generation. However brilliant an exploration of the past is, it will always be influenced by the historian’s background and identity. The next generation – perhaps you – may ask different questions, look for different sources, and write it differently.

Our curriculum is designed to produce students who are able to think in a historical way, who have a strong sense of the period they are studying so that they can be rigorous in their thinking and judgements, who are able to recognise strengths and weaknesses of sources and so can recognise what we can know and what we cannot. We provide opportunities for students to deepen and secure knowledge and understanding of British, local and world history, so that it provides a well-informed context for wider learning. Pupils can identify significant events, make connections, draw contrasts, and analyse trends within periods and over long arcs of time through thematic studies. They are taught to use historical terms and concepts in increasingly sophisticated ways. Pupils are challenged to understand how different types of historical sources are used to make historical claims and discern how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed. History is also personal as it challenges our students to think about themselves and develop an understanding of the world around them.

How is the curriculum delivered?
