National Youth Jazz Orchestra Inspires Pupils at Co-op Academy North Manchester

On Wednesday, 26th March 2025, Co-op Academy North Manchester had the privilege of welcoming the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) for an exciting and immersive workshop with our Academy Big Band.
The workshop focused on developing pupils' musical improvisation skills, helping them refine their technique and confidence in a band setting. Under the expert guidance of NYJO musicians, our pupils explored new ways to express themselves through jazz and enhance their ensemble performance.
The hard work and dedication of our young musicians will be showcased in an upcoming performance at Band on the Wall in Manchester on 24th June 2025. This will be a fantastic opportunity for them to demonstrate their progress and passion for jazz music.
Mr Rudden, Senior Instrumental tutor, said:
"We are incredibly grateful to the National Youth Jazz Orchestra for their time, expertise, and inspiration. Ahnanse from NYJO helped us to connect with our inner ears and bring ideas using our voices to our instruments. It was an unforgettable experience for our pupils, and we look forward to seeing their continued musical growth!"
Michael, a member of the academy big band, said, "It helped me to view improvisation as small and easier to understand elements rather than one big scary challenge."
Michalina added, "It was nice to see the younger of the members in the band growing in confidence and having fun."
