Parent Digest, Half Term One, October 2024
It was lovely to be able to see so many parents at our fabulous Open Evening - once again, we were fully booked and this is reflected in our current pupil numbers. We were really pleased to be able to share our vision and values with Year 5 and Year 6 parents and children and for them to see our pupils in action all across the academy. If your child helped at the event, please pass on our thanks, and we hope they enjoyed their roles as much as we were proud of their commitment.
Even though this half-term feels like it has sped by, it’s important to recognise all the great work our staff and pupils have done in just the first few weeks back.
Unforgettable Week at Jamie's Farm for Year 10 Girls
Twelve Year 10 girls recently had the unique opportunity to spend a week at Jamie’s Farm, a working farm in Monmouthshire.
Year 7 Pupils selected their free Book Buzz title
Year 7 pupils recently participated in engaging author presentations featuring this year's selected BookBuzz titles. Pupils had the opportunity to explore a variety of books and choose their favourite, which will be delivered just in time for Christmas! This exciting initiative helps inspire a love for reading and introduces them to a diverse range of stories.
Year 10 Pupils Join Brilliant Club Scholars Programme
In October, 14 of our aspiring Year 10 pupils took part in the launch of the Brilliant Club’s Scholars Programme. During the event, they learnt about the programme, explored the opportunities in higher education, and discussed the benefits of this academic journey. The pupils are excited about beginning their project, which will delve into the fascinating topic of star formation and address the intriguing question: Are we all made of stars?
Year 10 Physicists Visit Jodrell Bank
On Friday, 11th October, 30 of our Year 10 Physics pupils visited Jodrell Bank. They enjoyed hands-on exhibitions, they learnt about the history and groundbreaking work of the observatory, and attended the engaging Wonders of Science show. It was a fantastic way to conclude our Space Week celebrations!
Partnership with the MU Foundation
The academy is proud to have a working partnership with the MU Foundation. Mr. Howarth collaborates closely with pupils across the academy, providing numerous opportunities to attend special events hosted by the foundation.
This half-term, pupils participated in a Show Racism the Red Card event, where they engaged in workshops to develop their skills as anti-racism leaders. Additionally, the foundation organised a trip to the University of Manchester, where pupils took part in engineering workshops, applying their STEM knowledge to create a hydraulic claw and a catapult.
Earlier in the term, pupils also attended a Cyber Event hosted by CyberFirst at Old Trafford, further enhancing their skills and knowledge in this vital area.
First Story Project
During the last academic year, a group of enthusiastic pupils participated in the First Story Project. They attended weekly workshops with professional writer Nick Berry. Nik guided the pupils through the intricacies of creative writing, helping them develop their skills and discover their unique voices. The result of their efforts will be the creation of a collective anthology, showcasing the pupils' individual creative writing pieces. These anthologies will be proudly displayed in the school library. The pupils will receive copies of the anthology to keep as well as a copy of their anthology in the British Library in London.
We are pleased to announce that following this success, the First Story Project will return again and another group of budding poets will get the opportunity to see their work published.
Year 11 Geography Field Trips
Our Year 11 Geography pupils have recently participated in field trips to enhance their GCSE studies. On Monday, 9th September, they visited Salford Quays, where they conducted surveys of the local area and how regeneration has created opportunities there. Following that, on Monday, 23rd September, they explored the Cleveleys coastline, further enriching their understanding of coastal environments, the processes at work and how defences help to protect the town. These hands-on experiences are invaluable in supporting their GCSE Geography journey!
Pupils Engage in Dance Workshop and Performance
On Wednesday, 9th October, our pupils had an incredible experience collaborating with Qudus Onikeku and the QDance Company in a workshop focused on Afro Hip Hop, where they learnt movements inspired by Nigerian heritage. Following the workshop, they explored the galleries at The Lowry, where they admired various elements related to the SIX musical, including the intricate costumes and stunning set designs.
Additionally, pupils participated in the Lowry’s advanced CAT scheme, where they observed a contemporary dance class. They had the opportunity to interact with one of the program's teachers, who shared valuable insights about pursuing careers in the arts and educational pathways.
To finish off the day, pupils enjoyed a captivating evening performance of Re:Incarnation by Qudus’ company, which they found thoroughly enjoyable.

Rewards Trips for Half Term 2
This term, we were thrilled to invite over 750 pupils to our end-of-term rewards session. Pupils were recognised for their positive attitudes towards learning and for embodying the academy’s vision and values.
As we move into the second half of the term, we will be implementing specific criteria for pupils to qualify for the end-of-term rewards trips. To be eligible, pupils must have no late arrivals, no unauthorised absences and no negative behaviour points.
Attendance remains a really important focus for us all here at the academy and every moment in school really does matter. The biggest factor in success in Year 11’s GCSEs is not how well they did in Primary school or how able they were, but how often they attended school. Ofsted notes how well written and sequenced our curriculum is, so if your child is in school every day, you are making their success in Year 11 guaranteed. From day one of Year 7 to the end of Year 11, each lesson, club, form time and social time increases knowledge, social skills, personal development and improves young people’s mental health and supports their ability and willingness to learn.
Please get in touch with me directly if you prefer or through the attendance team on noma-attendanceteam-m@coopacademies.co.uk if you have any questions or concerns around your child attending school - feel free to email Sharon Hands on sharon.hands@coopacademies.co.uk
