Physical Education

Physical Education gives our pupils the ability to take part, not only as players but as leaders and officials. It gives them the skills needed in their day-to-day life, the opportunity for individual growth and to achieve their full potential.

Our curriculum is designed in a way that helps enhance health, build character and improve well-being. We offer a broad range of activities and sports including gymnastics, netball, football, and basketball. Pupils will also get involved in less traditional activities including mindfulness, frisbee and orienteering.

Pupils are taught to develop their core skills across a number of sports and also their knowledge of specific activities and elements of those sports. Pupils get to build on this knowledge over our KS3 to ensure they are able to experience sport and physical activity that will provide them with a platform to stay physically fit and active for life.

We encourage all pupils to take part in our extra curricular programme which offers opportunities beyond the classroom, as well as in a range of sports. We offer high quality coaching for our pupils to be able to improve their skills and knowledge of a number of activities.

PE makes a major contribution to the overall education of young people by helping them to lead full and valuable lives through engaging in purposeful activity. We hope that through PE lessons and extra-curricular sports pupils will find an activity that they enjoy and want to continue participating in.

The KS3 scheme of work is devised to develop pupils’ knowledge and understanding as well as providing enjoyment and willingness to participate in all activities. We encourage all pupils to evaluate their own performance which enables them to develop tactics and ideas in all areas.

During their journey at Key Stage 4 Level each pupil will use their knowledge, understanding, skills and values and build on this to develop and maintain their performance in physical activities whilst gaining an understanding on how it can benefit their health, fitness and well-being.

Examination PE at KS4 consists of 2 externally set coursework components, one of which is completed in Year 10 and the other in Year 11. Component 3 comprises of an externally set exam which pupils sit at the end of Year 11 in the May exam series.

How is the curriculum delivered?

All pupils in years 7-10 receive two hours of PE per week, with year 11 receiving one hour per week. In addition to this pupils following the BTEC Tech Award have an additional 5 hours in year 10 and 6 hours in year 11 which is a mixture of practical and theory lessons.

Pupils take part in 2 activities every 8 weeks with a focus on skill development, knowledge and understanding and application of both of these elements into competitive practice. On completion of each unit pupils are assessed against age related expectations.

Pupils are assessed at the end of each 8 week SOL through google quizzes to assess knowledge and also practically in lessons also based on practical knowledge as well as practical ability. We do this based on our Head, Heart and Hands assessment model.

Pupils who are excused from lessons are still required to take an active part in the lesson to ensure learning takes place. Pupils are expected to take on some form of leadership role in lessons from umpiring/refereeing to coaching to organising drills/skills practices.

Feedback about pupils progress will be given by PE staff during lessons, at parents evening and also in reports.

Wider learning opportunities

Extra curricular clubs are offered throughout the whole school across all key stages both after-school and at lunch-time.

Within PE some of these sports link to the curriculum and others are stand alone sports that pupils have asked to see on the timetable such as dodgeball, badminton.

Competitions happen regularly throughout the year via our Manchester School Sports PE calendar and also our Coop Trust Competition Calendar, these expose children to new sports and experiences such as GoalBall, Multi-skills Pananthlon and also Uni-Hoc.

Links to careers pathways throughout the curriculum

There are lots of PE Pathways that are highlighted to pupils throughout lessons from becoming a PE teacher to developing athletes through sports coaching.
