Start of Term, 8th January 2024

Dear Parents/Carers,

Subject: Return to school - Uniform and passes

Firstly we would like to wish all our pupils and their families a happy and successful New Year for 2024.  We know returning to school from a break can be difficult however we are looking forward to welcoming our pupils back to school on Monday 8th of January at 08:30 am.

Uniform

As a school we are incredibly proud of the way our pupils present themselves and how being in full school uniform creates a strong sense of belonging to our North Manchester community.

As we embark on a new school term, we would like to take this opportunity to remind you of our school's uniform policy.  A consistent and well-maintained uniform is an integral part of our commitment to providing a conducive learning environment and fostering a sense of pride amongst our pupils.  We greatly appreciate your cooperation and support in ensuring that your child complies with the school's uniform policy.

Uniform Guidelines

Our uniform policy is designed to promote a positive and inclusive atmosphere within the school community. Please ensure that your child adheres to the following guidelines:

  • Black blazer with Academy logo

  • Black trousers or skirt

  • White shirt

  • Year group tie

  • Plain black leather/faux leather shoes

  • Black socks or black tights

  • Pupils can also choose to wear a plain black jumper under their blazer. If a pupil wishes to wear a headscarf or turban, we ask that is that the material is plain black.

  • Suitable waterproof outside coat.

We also ask pupils to bring a sensible school bag, pencil case with stationery and a pupil planner with them to school each day.  A school bag is an essential item as our pupils are expected to take their books / revision materials home each day and bring their PE kit with them to school.  A pupil planner is also an essential item as this allows pupils to check their timetable, record their homework, check for extra-curricular activities and monitor their weekly attendance to school.

Our pastoral team are available each morning as part of our morning meet and greet.  Should any pupil wish to speak to a member of staff about their school uniform then they should speak with their head of year or pastoral manager when entering school in the morning.

Mr Norbury, Mr Kelly, Mr Greenfield and Mr Morrison are available to speak to at the Yellow Winter Garden each morning alongside Miss Duffy, Miss Morrison and Miss Kelleher.

Mr Beard, Miss Stubbs, Miss Watkins and Miss Parkinson are available to speak to in the year 7 yard each morning.

How to buy school uniform

The Academy blazer, tie and PE kit can be bought directly from the Academy. We are the only authorised supplier of our school uniform. As your child outgrows their uniform or needs new items, you can purchase new items via our ParentMail app.

Once you have placed your order, it will be available to collect from school the next day.  Please tell your child to collect their order from the main reception.

As part of our commitment to supporting pupils and their families during the cost of living crisis, we are able to offer a uniform exchange.  If your child's uniform becomes too small for them, they are able to exchange their uniform for bigger sizes at the uniform swap shop.  Please ask your child to speak with their head of year if they need to swap any uniform items.

Uniform rules

We are aware that pupils will have  received gifts over the Christmas period including coats, jewellery, mobile phones, smart devices and hoodies.  To ensure the highest standards and to foster a sense of belonging and pride in the school community, all pupils are expected to adhere to the following uniform rules:

  • Expensive items such as coats should not be brought to school.

  • Hoodies are not permitted to be worn within the academy and should not be brought to school.

  • Jewellery, body piercings and make-up are not a part of the Academy uniform. This includes nails, which must be natural and of an acceptable length due to health and safety requirements.

  • Trainers of any sort, including converse, are not permitted in the Academy except for PE sessions. Footwear that is branded with a sports logo or name is also not permitted. All shoes must be black leather/faux leather.

  • Pupils are not permitted to attend the Academy with any form of pattern shaved into their heads or eyebrows. Mohican style haircuts and unnatural colouring to hair are also not accepted.

Mobile Phones

Mobile phones and smart watches are not permitted to be used or seen on site during the school day.  On arrival at the academy, pupils must turn off their mobile phones and store them safely in their bags. Pupils wishing to contact parents/carers should contact home via their appropriate Year Office and likewise parents/carers should refrain from contacting pupils directly and ring the main switchboard on 0161 681 1592.

Winter clothing

As we enter the colder months of January and February it is important that all pupils have warm winter clothing.  Further to the letters I have written to parents and carers prior to the end of term we have been able to work with the Manchester United Football Club Foundation to provide coats, gloves, scarves and hats to families and members of our school community.  Should any pupil in our school not have any essential winter clothing please let us know and we will look to support.

School passes

As mentioned in the letter I wrote to parents/carers in the last week of term I am writing to share further details of the new school pass system which will launch at the start of the new term.

Members of staff from within the academy have been in contact with families to inform them if their child will receive a pass in January.  Key workers from within the SEND department have been in contact with parents/carers for pupils who will receive a new school pass.  Pastoral team members of staff have also been in contact with families to confirm that their child will also receive a school pass.

If you have not been contacted then this will mean that your child will not have a school pass for the new term. Should you wish to discuss your child's pass then please do contact the school.

In our school, the toilets remain open throughout the day.  We trust our pupils to take toilet breaks at appropriate times during the day.  Some pupils in the academy have toilet passes and medical passes.  These will be reviewed annually to ensure that the right passes are going to the right pupils.

The new passes have been printed on green paper and will be used from the start of term until Easter, when the colour will change.  The new passes will be issued on the first day back of the new term.  Pupils will sign for their new passes and hand over their old passes.  Pupils who have been contacted will be asked to meet in the canteen at 08:30 on Monday 8th January to collect their new passes.  Pupils who have key workers will collect their passes from the Hub before the start of the school day on Monday 8th January.  Any passes not given out in the morning will be dropped off to pupils in form time to ensure all pupils have the correct passes.

Should any pupil wish to speak to a member of staff about their school pass then we have arranged to make some time and space on Monday 8th January in the canteen between 08:30 - 9:00 am.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the academy uniform or school passes outlined above, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Yours sincerely,

Mr A Burkitt

Vice Principal
